Memorial Day is almost upon us. The beginning of summer, cookouts, family and everything that is fantastic about America. Most of us, we will kick off Memorial Day with an annual "Murph"!
We suggest you take a moment to remind your members what the Murph workout is all about. Some of your members only know who Hero Michael Murphy was by watching the movie Lone Survivor or through casual conversation at your Box, but do they really know? What about the workout itself? Where did it come from? Why did CrossFit® single it out?
Murphy, who was awarded the U.S. military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor for his actions during the war in Afghanistan loved this workout. The "Murph" Hero WOD was originally posted on CrossFit's site as the WOD on Thursday August 18, 2005.
"This workout was one of Mike's favorites and he'd named it 'Body Armor.' From here on it will be referred to as 'Murph' in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is."
As "Murph" has become one of the most famous CrossFit® workouts that we do once...maybe twice a year, Michael Murphy had this in his regular rotation. So not only do we honor a true American Hero by doing an incredibly difficult WOD in his name on Memorial Day, but we are doing his workout. As we site here 14 years later ask your members during that first mile to take a couple seconds to remember that they are spending just a moment in Hero Michael Murphy's shoes.
